More and more homes in rural areas are now being fitted with septic tanks instead of a sewer connection due to their remote location. This article is aimed at providing you with a number of tips of how to take care of your septic tank to ensure that it functions as efficiently as possible. Looking after your septic tank is not difficult, modern septic tanks make it easier and easier to maintain them if you follow a few basic guidelines.
Divert rainwater away from the septic drain-field.
If you are incorrectly diverting rain water your drain-field may be unable to absorb and neutralise liquid waste. To ensure this does not happen, Envrioflow Management recommend that you plan your landscaping appropriately, roof gutters and any foundation drains away from your septic drain-field.
Avoid overloading your Septic Tank.
There are a number of different ways to avoid overloading your septic tank, the main priority is managing your water usage. Little changes can help avoid overloading your septic tank such as reducing water levels during your clothes wash, only running the dishwasher once it is full and use a displacer to reduce the amount of water required to flush the toilet. Additionally, regularly check your toilets and other white goods for leaks and make repairs where necessary. Finally try using flow reducer nozzles on your showers to help lower water consumption during showers.
Avoid planting trees near your Septic Tank
Often root damage can cause damage to septic tanks and can cause a lengthy repair bill or even a new septic tank all together. Enviroflow Management recommend that you plant any trees at least 100ft away from your septic tank. Any larger trees, with more aggressive roots such as oak trees, should be planted even further away, ideally 150ft away.
Keep your toilet as a toilet!
Your toilet is not designed to handle any waste products, just toilet paper. To ensure that your septic tank avoids blocking we recommend that you do not flush any of the following items down your toilet; Cat Litter, Cigarette Butts, Facial Tissues, Nappies or Tampons. This will ensure that your septic tank is running smoothly and will not become clogged. It is surprising just how quick your septic tank can become clogged.
Avoid aggressive cleaners
Using an aggressive cleaning product to clean your sinks and toilets is great to ensure your toilet is sparkling clean but not your septic tank. Often, aggressive cleaners can kill beneficial bacteria within your septic tank. This bacteria can help break down the solids in your septic tank and increase the efficiency of your tank. Additionally we would also recommend that you do not dispose of any hazardous chemicals through your toilet such as paint thinners or motor oil. This will cause your ground water to be hazardous.
Grease and Fat
Enviroflow Management highly recommend that you do not pour any excess grease, oil or fat down your drains. By pouring this excess grease and oil down your drains you risk clogging up your drain-field. This means that it will be unable to absorb liquids resulting in a new drain-field being required.
Protect your Septic Tank System
Enviroflow Management recommends that you do not drive over your drain-fields as this can cause damage. Also you should never cover it with concrete or asphalt to ensure that it can still absorb and drain liquid. Finally if you plant grass on your drain-field it could cause soil erosion.
Regular Septic Tank Maintenance
It is very important to have regular maintenance carried out on your septic tank. This ensures that it is always fully functioning correctly and avoids any damage. Your septic tank should be pumped every 1-3 years depending on its usage and size. Enviroflow also recommend that you have your tank cleaned using our industrial tank cleaning service after it has been emptied. This ensures everything remains clean and in a fully working condition. Additionally you should never open your own septic tank, the gases and bacteria that will be released can be extremely dangerous. Visit our septic tank emptying page for more information. Furthermore, we also offer a planned maintenance service for all your waste management needs.
